What is MD5?
MD5 is a cryptographic hash function that produces a 32-character hexadecimal digest from any input. It was designed for data integrity verification — confirming a file was not corrupted during transfer. MD5 is not secure for passwords or digital signatures.
Can MD5 hashes be reversed or cracked?
MD5 is a one-way function — there is no mathematical inverse. However, precomputed rainbow tables cover billions of common strings and short passwords. If someone has your MD5 hash and it was computed from a common password, lookup tables can find the original in seconds. MD5 is not safe for password storage — use bcrypt, Argon2, or scrypt instead.
What is MD5 used for today if it is cryptographically broken?
MD5 is still widely used for non-security purposes: file integrity checksums (verifying a download matches its advertised hash), deduplication in storage systems, and cache keys. In these contexts, accidental collisions are astronomically unlikely and deliberate attacks are not a concern. For anything security-related, use SHA-256 or SHA-3.
What is the difference between MD5 and SHA-256?
Both produce a fixed-size hash from arbitrary input, but SHA-256 produces a 256-bit hash (64 hex chars) vs MD5's 128-bit (32 hex chars). More importantly, SHA-256 has no known collision attacks and is considered cryptographically secure; MD5 has practical collision attacks demonstrated since 2004. Is the MD5 hash of the same input always the same?
Yes. MD5 (and all cryptographic hash functions) are deterministic — the same input always produces the same output, on any machine, any OS, at any time. This determinism is what makes them useful for integrity checking. It is also what makes them vulnerable to precomputed rainbow table attacks on short inputs.
